He has had extensive experience with occupational asthma, hypersensitivity reactions such as farmers lung and industrial dust diseases from his time at the MRC pneumoconiosis unit in South Wales and later in the Midlands. During the last 18 years in the NorthEast he has extended his extensive experience with asbestos related lung diseases. Research interests have included sarcoidosis, asthma therapy, exercise physiology and the treatment of hypertension with comorbidities. He has had considerable undergraduate and postgraduate teaching experience at local, national and international having been Royal College Tutor and leading several international conferences on asthma treatment and management, occupational asthma and allergy, exercise rehabilitation and research ethics in USA, Canada, Russia, Middle East, Africa and Australia. He has served in a management capacity on several national and international organisations for asthma and research and ethical governance.

Over the years he has acted as clinical lead in Asthma and COPD, Lung cancer, Tuberculosis and Interstitial Lung Diseases and Critical Care Medicine. He ran a pleural diseases service, initiating medical thoracoscopy in 1985 and inaugurated a joint rheumatological lung clinic in the early 1990s. With early training in paediatrics and immunology, he ran a joint allergy and asthma service for 16 years and remains an active member of the northern paediatric allergy group.

Dr Bone has been a Consultant Physician (General Internal, Respiratory and Clinical Allergy) for over 30 years and still provides supervision of acute unselected medical intake at one of England's consistently top performing NHS Trust Hospitals.
